Loma Linda Proton Research Centre

The world’s media recently made us all aware of the cancer treatment called ‘proton therapy’  with the highly sympathetic publicity for Ashya King and his parents. The Prime Minster and Deputy Prime Minister and opposition leader, Ed Milliband joined in.

On Friday there was news of another family who were prepared to sell their home – and presumably become homeless – in order to fund Proton Therapy Treatment for their 7 year-old daughter suffering from a rare brain tumour. Since Friday the media reports the public have raised £176,000, just over the weekend, to fund the treatment so the family will not have to sell their home.

From material in the previous post on Loma Linda University Hospital I found it informative  to read about Loma Linda’s success story pioneering Proton Therapy treatment. While not originating with Loma Linda, it was interesting to read that Proton Therapy was developed at Loma Linda.

“1990 James M. Slater, MD pioneered the field of proton therapy at Loma Linda University Medical Center (LLUMC) and it remained the only hospital-based treatment center of its kind in the United States until 2003.”

“The James M. Slater, MD Proton Treatment and Research Center is the first hospital-based treatment center in the world and has treated over 17,500 patients, more than any other treatment center. With over 20 years experience in using proton therapy to treat disease, our expertise is unsurpassed.

“The staff at the James M. Slater, MD Proton Treatment and Research Center are some of the most qualified in field of Radiation Medicine, and they bring a wealth of experience in treating patients with a variety of cancers and conditions. Since 1990, Loma Linda University Medical Center’s Proton Treatment Center has been leading the way in effective, cutting-edge prostate cancer treatment with protons. Simply put: we have treated the most patients with proton therapy and have the most experienced staff in the world.”

A prostate cancer patient treated at Loma Linda has posted a detailed account of his full journey experience from examination to treatment outcome. If the detail is not necessary just scroll down to the last two paragraphs of his post. He is happy with the result. There is more information on Loma Linda here:
